It has been announced that there has been a major breakthrough in the jail breaking process for the iPhone after the 1.1.1 update. The process is not available to the public yet since is has not gotten all of the kinks worked out of it yet, but it should be very soon.
This means that most of the third party applications should begin to poor in again for a while. This is good for those that have become dependent on the third party apps.
This will likely be a short lived triumph since Apple has shown a lot of intent towards thwarting any third party activity on the iPhone. Nevertheless, hackers are going to be fighting to get the third party apps on the iPhone and that means that if you are willing to stay behind the Apple Software updates, then you can stick with the third party apps while you wait for the hackers to hack the iPhone again.
